We also offer weaving and spinning for beginners via the Mission Weavers & Spinners Guild.

Weaving for Beginners

Weaving for Beginners Workshop,
organised by the Mission Weavers & Spinners Guild

4 SATURDAYS from 10am to 2pm on the first Saturday,  10am to 12pm own the consecutive Saturdays, 10hrs in total

Sep 14, 21, 28 and Oct 12, 2019

You'll learn the absolute beginnings of weaving on a 4 harness table loom and you'll have a scarf at the end of the course.

Your teacher will help you through the moves and will provide you with the basic skills to start weaving.

Costs:
*$170.00; optional $25 Mission Weavers & Spinners Guild Membership for table loom rental.

Materials:
Bring your own 4 harness table loom or borrow one; members of the Mission Weavers & Spinners Guild can borrow a table loom from the Guild; membership is $25/yr.

My First Socks

Wednesdays, 3x 90min classes from 6:30PM-8:00PM

September 25, October 9 and 23, 2019

Socks can be an intimidating project, but they're so much fun to knit!
Before you know it you'll be addicted to knitting them.

In these classes you'll learn:

Class 1
1. Working with circular needles and the Magic Loop and starting the cuff.

2. Dividing for the heel flap and knitting the heel flap

Use the time in between classes to knit the rest of the heel flap (must do homework)

Class 2
3. Turning the heel
4. Working the gusset

Use the time in between classes to knit to the toe (must do homework).

Class 3
5. Toe shaping
6. Kitchener stitch (grafting the toe)

You'll need:

100g of worsted weight yarn (200m), 1 circular needle 3.75mm/US5, 80cm long.

We'll be making short socks, the goal is to learn the techniques!

Pattern & instruction booklet included.

Must take part in all three classes.

Two-at-once Toe Up Socks

Wednesdays from 6:30pm-8:00pm (3x 90min.)
Oct 30, Nov 13 and 27, 2019

This class is for the knitter who has sucessfully knit at least one pair of socks before, and has a fair bit of prior knitting experience.

From the toe up means you can try them on as you go to get the best fit and use all your yarn without fear of wasting any or running out. Magic looping means you don’t need to use DPNs ever again. You will cover principles of toe-up construction, toe-up cast on, working a heel, stretchy cast-off and the magic loop technique, and have a full pattern to take home and learn to knit TWO SOCKS AT THE SAME TIME!

Class 1: Casting on, increasing and knitting the magic loop method
Homework: use time in between classes to knit to the point of heel turning
Class 2: Turning the heel
Homework: use time in between classes to knit to the point of ribbing and bind off
Class 3: resolving issues, stretchy bind off

Must know how to knit in the round ON CIRCULAR NEEDLES and distinguish between knit and purl stitches; materials not included.

Bring your own sock/fingering yarn in a light colour and a 2.5mm - 100cm long circular needle or your preferred yarn and circular needle combo. Comes with free sock pattern.

Brioche Knitting

Learn to knit the Brioche stitch!

Saturday November 9, 2019 from 2:30pm-4:30pm

Brioche Stitch creates a wonderfully lofty, widely ribbed fabric. People often find it intimidating, due to the yarn overs or maybe because of the abbreviations used in the pattern.
Your instructor will lead you by the hand to conquer this beautiful stitch in the Brioche Hat!

Expand your knitting skills with Building Blocks

12x 1 hour on Thursdays from 5:30-6:30pm.

Improve your knitting skills one square at a time! The building blocks series is designed to help knitters navigate through the major knitting skills, techniques, and principles. Each of the 12 patterns isolates a new skill.

At the completion of the series, the reward is an abundance of knitting know-how along with 12 gorgeous blocks to assemble into a blanket or several pillow cases.

My First Sweater Drop-Ins

Saturdays from 2:30pm-4:30pm on October 19, Nov 23 and Dec 21

Do you feel like the sweaters you make never seem to suit you the way you’d like? Would you like to learn some simple tips and tricks (as well as more advanced ones) to help you crack the process?

Bring along a tape measure, your wits and a calculator and we’ll get started. Bring one ball of your project yarn and suitable circular needles (see pattern below).

Stranded Colorwork Hat

Learn to knit the lovely Fair Isle Hat by Maya Bosworth.

Fair Isle knitting, also known as stranded colorwork knitting, is a technique for working two (or more) colors of yarn in the same row. ... You will pick up each strand as you need it and this leaves a strand or float of yarn on the back side of the work.

Home work is required! You will have to knit the brim of the hat in the round at home before the class starts! Work the brim in colour A.
